After Baby is Born

There are many things to keep in mind after a pregnancy because keeping an infant safe and keeping yourself healthy is important for both you and baby. Here are some tips that will help you and baby.

  • Get help with starting and continuing to breastfeed — that way you will learn tricks to make it easier for you and your baby. Get answers to your breastfeeding questions from the Michigan Department of Community Health.
  • Sleep for you and baby are important; periods of infant crying are very normal. Get ideas for soothing baby and let Dad, Grandma, or others help when you need a break. Read more about infant sleep from the Mayo Clinic and the National Institute of Health.
  • Keeping baby safe is JOB ONE! For naps and night sleep, always place baby to sleep on his or her back, alone, in a crib without anything else in it. Read Do's and Don'ts from the Michigan Department of Community Health on infant safe sleep.
  • Babies need regular medical visits and immunizations. Make sure to keep all appointments for your baby's health. Read more about after baby arrives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • If, you feel stressed, very distressed, anxious, sad, overwhelmed, or that "something is not right" tell your doctor. Find out if it could be depression. Depression is treatable.   • It's important for your baby's development that you show your baby that his or her world is stable, safe, and that he or she is loved. Quickly respond to his or her needs and don't worry — it's not possible to "spoil" a baby. Be very gentle and loving at all times.
